THE CONSCIOUS MUSICIAN METHODOLOGY

“The Conscious Musician Program is exactly the missing component to classical musical curriculums”

Y.Lee, M.Mus, Guildahll School of Music

“Every musical problem is resolved first at the mental level.”

Derbez, 2015

The aim of this methodology is to help advanced students to develop their own skills for resolving their challenges of their daily practice and their preparation for public performances. In other words, the main skills outlined here are the capacity to study consciously with the support of specific techniques and to prepare for performances. In this way, students can turn their practice time into a work of art, and the feeling of obligation to study will be replaced with a sense of real enjoyment.

The methodology offers solutions to a basic problem: the lack of daily practice strategies, which affects student’s relationship with their instrument and their relationship with the stage. It is an organic program in which a harmonious relationship between mind, emotions and body is fundamental for success. It provides a framework for students to become their own best teachers in their daily study process. It is thus an approach that not only supports their daily practice but also provides tools that will help them develop a free and expressive interpretation of their musical repertoire. This methodology also provides new teaching principles to enhance music education.

The Conscious Musician Methodology® proposes a holistic vision of studying, performing, and relating to your instrument and to the world of sound. It highlights the importance of our mind, emotions, and body as a united whole. It is the emotional level that connects the mental and the physical levels. All this work helps students to turn stage fright into enjoyment and a moment of authentic and powerful expression.

TESTIMONIALS

Concious Musician Seminar Testimonial
Rosa Romero performing Songs that my Mother taught me by A. Dvorak

“I have a clear and close relationship with my instrument. And this is exactly what violin means to me. An instrument to express through sounds. I have found the way to connect with my inner creativity and to know exactly what I want to hear when I play. I am not worried any more about my technique because since I know clearly in my mind what I want from a musical piece I know that my body will response in a natural way to that clear idea in my mind and that my ear will be my best guide in this process. I simply found my way of practicing and playing, a way that I have enjoyed every part every second.

My relationship with music has become much deeper. When I do visual motor rehearsal, I can see the pieces from above and understand how to phrase a musical piece. I see the violin to connect with other dimensions, to connect with the source of each musical work. I don’t compare myself any more with other violinists. I now believe that my mission as an artist is to show the audience other realities where they can also connect with the source of music and transform themselves in a musical event. I have become a sonic character on the stage and feel in my heart every emotion I want to express.”

Rosa Romero, bachelor’s in music education University of Veracruz

“I feel much more confident when I play. I feel more relaxed when I perform and now, I have a clear idea in my mind about the pieces I play. Now my relationship with music is fantastic and powerful. I have a closer and deeper relationship with music. My mission as an artist is to help people to forget in that moment of their problems and touch their hearts.”

Rogerio Pérez, bachelor in violin University of Veracruz

“I had the opportunity to observe the work of Paulina Derbez during the Music in the Alps Music Festival celebrated in Bad Gastein, Austria in the summer of 2018. The kind of innovative work I observed integrated the intellectual, emotional, and physical aspects of making music in a way that brought out the best capacities of the student she was working with to reach her highest potential. I believe that truly great music making can only happen when the whole of the person is involved in it. In my years as a performer and conductor I had not seen this kind of work where the teacher facilitates the work of the student at the depth Paulina Derbez does. As a conductor I would love to work with her in deepening my connection with all aspects of music making and I truly think the music world is crying for this kind of unique work and the human and holistic approach that Paulina Derbez brings to the music world.”
